Have you ever had a store-bought candle that smoked excessively? Burned down the middle of the candle? Waters Gulch candles are designed to not smoke and not tunnel, but proper maintenance of any candle can save you money and increase your enjoyment of your new aromas.
Protect your surfaces! Burn votives in a votive holder (WG votives take a small roly poly or a large oyster), and burn pillars on a plate. Surfaces should be heat proof - a votive holder can get hot when it's burning near the end. That's why you should always leave 1/2" of wax on the bottom.
Be attentive! Most candle accidents are caused by leaving a burning candle unattended. Don't do it! It is so easy to dip out the flame if you need to leave the room. An animal or child can knock over a candle unintentionally. That extra second could save you years of heartache!
Burn for the appropriate length of time. The 'rule' is to burn for 1 hour for each inch of diameter. For WG octagonal votives, make your first burn at least 1-2 hours. For 2" pillars, first burn should be 2 hours; 3" pillars, 3 to 4 hours. The shorter your burns, the more your candle will tunnel. Wax has a 'memory' - if you leave a wall of wax after your first burn, it will remember this and tunnel on subsequent burns. Longer burns may melt too much wax at once and cause the wick to drown.
Dip your wick! Blowing out a candle will cause it to smoke, and can splatter wax. Take a non-flammable object (or one of our Snuffies) and dip the lighted wick into the melted wax. Straighten and re-center the wick for your next burning. If you have a container candle with a lid, do not put out the candle by putting the lid on. You will create black soot on your container and may crack or damage the lid. Dip the wick, then put the lid on.
Keep your wick trimmed. A large flame can be the cause of soot. Keep your wicks 1/4 to 1/2" in length. A shorter wick is a smaller flame. Dip your wick out, trim it, and relight. WG votives use special wicks that self-trim, so you shouldn't have to trim them very often. Some of our heavier scents will cause our wicks to 'mushroom'. This is a reminder that it's time to trim.
Don't let your candle drip! Observe recommended burning times. Marathon burns will just consume a candle faster than normal. To make your candle last the longest time, burn votives no more than 4 hours a time, 2" pillars no more than 2 hours, and 3" pillars no more than 5 hours at a time. Our 2" pillars are designed to leave a small rim around the edge, that will eventual melt down in a petal pattern. Burning more than 2 hours at a time will cause the wall to crack and the melted wax to run down the side of the candle onto your protective plate. If this occurs, dip out the wick, let the melted wax harden, trim the wick and relight. Our 3" pillars leave a bit larger rim to prevent spillover. Hug these rims inward to help them be consumed during subsequent burns.
